What to Expect

Experiential – Have you been in therapy, talking and talking and feeling like not much has changed? I am trained in EMDR, Inner Child/Parts Work, Somatic and Sensorimotor interventions. These experiential approaches get you out of your head so you can begin to heal on multiple levels (somatic/movement, emotional, mental, even spiritual). I have a background in mindfulness, meditation, education, and the arts.

Mindfulness – Our bodies hold a lot of information and wisdom about what happened to us and what can help us heal. You will be guided and trusted to tap into your lived experience and identify what your body is telling you – about what you have experienced and what you need.

Individualized Treatment with a Relational Approach – Therapy is a collaboration between the therapist and client to discover and identify goals and needs, and to develop a plan for care. It is important for a therapist to see you and all parts of you that were harmed, not minimize or ignore them. We will identify your unique needs and go at your pace. I will be interested in how you are experiencing the process and let that be a guide.

Intensive Trauma Therapy & EMDR Experience

Sessions are offered for 90 minutes – 4 hours, allowing more space for therapeutic work in each session. After approximately 8 hours, it is possible to feel less distressed, reduce symptoms, and be more equipped to navigate the effects of trauma.

Intensive Trauma Therapy & EMDR includes a 15 minute consultation and safety screening to determine if intensive therapy will be a good fit for you. All clients must agree to a full safety plan prior to scheduling the first Intensive session.

What is Trauma?

Traumatic experiences cause us intense distress that we cannot process or cope with at the time, take away our sense of safety, and significantly impact our lives. Traumatic events: may happen one time, be repeated for prolonged periods of time, or be a combination of different harmful experiences. No matter what the event was, if it causes you intense distress and impacts your life it was traumatic.

When trusted people in our lives (parents, caregivers) don’t know about it, or if they do and refuse to “see” it for what it is, it worsens our distress because we are not nurtured or seen (“You’re making that up,” “That didn’t happen,” “It isn’t that bad,” “It happened to me too, and I’m fine,” “Worse things happen to people”). Trauma starts with a harmful event, and we are profoundly impacted when we do not receive the care that we need.

Flashbacks and Dissociation

We experience flashbacks and dissociation as a result of surviving traumatic experiences. We may feel like a traumatic event from the past is happening to us again. We may be in a similar situation, or encountering similar material (movies, books, images, sensations) that causes our body and mind to react. Some people do not “see” the trauma memory, but feel it happening to them again physically and emotionally. Sometimes, people feel like they are beside themselves and disconnected in the present moment, sometimes so intensely that they are not aware of time passing and can’t remember what just happened. Having moments where you feel like a child again, lose your ability to talk or perform adult behaviors, are also signs. You may notice:

  • Your reaction doesn’t match the current situation you are in.
  • Feeling an intense flood of strong, distressing emotions and body sensations.
  • You may or may not have visual images of the trauma coming back into your mind.

EMDR and Experiential therapy both provide ways to use this information to guide the therapeutic experience and identify ways to heal.
